Acrilica Still Life by Joe and Gianni Colombo

Designed by Joe Colombo and Gianni Colombo

Design Joe Colombo, 1962

Designed by Joe Colombo in collaboration with Gianni Colombo, the Acrilica (Model 281) is a pioneering piece of kinetic lighting design. First introduced in 1962, this revolutionary lamp immediately captured attention with its sculptural curved acrylic body and its exceptional ability to conduct and diffuse light.

Unlike traditional lighting solutions, Acrilica leverages the optical properties of thick methacrylate, allowing the light source—concealed within a painted steel base—to travel through the transparent structure, illuminating the upper curve in a seemingly magical movement. The result is a striking fusion of art, design, and technology, making it more than just a lamp but a true work of kinetic art.

A testament to Joe Colombo’s visionary approach, the Acrilica lamp remains a sought-after icon of Italian mid-century modern design. With its bold form and futuristic aesthetic, it continues to illuminate interiors as a collector’s masterpiece, blending timeless elegance with groundbreaking innovation.
